Can provide grants to families on a low income with a physically or mentally disabled dependant to have a modest holiday in the UK.

Equipment demonstration centre. Publishes directory of equipment, a series of daily living guides and specialist resource packs.

Can arrange legal advice and conciliation to help resolve disputes. Takes enforcement action against non compliance with the Act.

To provide appropriate assistance and practical and financial help to disabled people wishing to take an active part in gardening. Grants made to help with the design of special gardens. Information, advice and assistance to disabled gardeners living in their own homes or in small sheltered units, encourages disabled gardeners to exchange plants and seeds and share experiences.

  • Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy: www.halliwick.org.uk - To encourage and promote and teach swimming to disabled people of all ages and all disabilities using a specialist technique known as the Halliwick method. Maintaining contact amongst over 200 affiliated local clubs.

  • Handicapped Aid Trust: 01253 796 441 - Provides funds towards the cost of carers for holidays for the disabled.

  • Independent Living Fund: 0845 6018815www.ilf.org.uk National resource dedicated to the financial support of disabled people to enable them to choose to live in the community rather than in residential care.

  • Mobilise: 01508 489449, www.mobilise.info - Information and advice for disabled drivers and disabled passengers. Website helps disabled motorists to buy and sell vehicles.

  • National Centre for Independent Living: 020 7587 1663 - Telephone information and advice for disabled people on Direct Payments (money from the Independent Living Fund or local authorities that can help disabled people to employ personal assistants or support workers). Helps groups of disabled people develop their own solutions to independent living and get access to Direct Payments.

Information on deafness and hearing loss, including hearing aids, education, communication, benefits, services for deaf people, tinnitus.

  • Seeing Dogs Alliance: 01483 765556, email info@seeingdogs.org.uk, www.seeingdogs.org.uk - Provides professionally reared dogs to anyone wanting to achieve or maintain personal mobility while remaining truly independent.

  • Shared Care Network: 0117 941 5361 - www.sharedcarenetwork.org.uk  short break schemes link disabled children with families and individuals who can provide them with short term care on a regular basis. This can be anything from an evening a week to a weekend a month. Most children who use the service have a learning difficulty although they may have a physical disability, complex health care needs or a sensory impairment.

Issues covered include applying to further and higher education, financial assistance while studying, examination arrangements, disclosing disability, looking for work, benefits and community services for students with disabilities.

  • Vitalise: 0845 3451972, www.vitalise.org.uk - Vitalise is a national charity providing short breaks (respite care) for disabled people, visually impaired people and their carers.
